Can't write much, this system is all screwy. Long story short, the festival is rough. Tons of bad work that lacks emphasis, narrative density and other very depressing things. In the midst of this, looking at my film on a bad projector with bad sound a few lessons finally settled in. Anybody back at CalArts, take this to heart! Make a SHORT film, ten minutes or less. Turns out the world doesn't care about your vision if it isn't disciplined. If its loose, its going to get walked on. I'm taking some heavy shots and I thought I'd done OK. I was wrong. The films that are getting love here are short and too the point. All the spacious, moody films look like junkers next to those.

Rough, man. Sorry to hear that. Are the short, to the point films good? I've seen too many "student" films that are just one note jokes, or tiny little M. Night rip-offs. I'm sure Orphans is way better than most if not all of the films there. Festivals are depressing. Commercials often look cooler than art.
Much love - take solace in that you're there, not here!

Yo JR, the program was pretty nuts, but it got a lot better. In the last couple days they've screened a couple of heavy hitters, totally professional films with real budgits, pro crews etc. I guess since most student filmmakers aren't working in specific genres the programming is really hard so it swings from a horror flick to a doc about HIV in Africa. Tweeked my head at first. Cant really say where the Orphans stands, way above average for performance, but a big stack of these films were shot on 16 or 35. State funding.
